THERE is a long and proud tradition of hockey in Lydney and today's team is a match for any in the past 30 years says veteran player Kevin Broadhurst.

Still remembered as a lively scrum-half for Lydney RFC, Broadhurst played both sports for a while But for more years than he cares to remember he has concentrated on hockey. Next year will be his 30th season with the club.

And he reckons today's team is a match for any he has played with – a nice mix of youth and experience and some cracking youngsters developing into quality players.

The club plays in South Wales and West Premier League Division Three and only missed out on promotion on goal difference.

Reflecting on a good season and an unbeaten home record with nine wins and a draw, Broadhurst – a Wales over 40s player – said names to watch for included Andy Horne and Matt Stanley.

An outstanding addition to the squad had been Anton de Leeuw, a goalkeeper who has played for the South African youth team and who has been in excellent form.

Saturday's game brought Lydney a 4-2 victory over local rivals Chepstow.

For Lydney goals were scored by Steve Lewis (2), Kevin Broadhurst and Martin Saunders.

There were good performances for Lydney by Will Hunt, Will Brown and Jeremy Box.
