MONMOUTH'S Shire Hall has been given a year to become self supporting as councillors struggle to reduce the gap between running costs and income.

County Council cabinet members voted last week to inject £229,477 into the building's running costs for this financial year until the landmark building's business plan can fully take effect.

The revised plan aims to provide a clear sense of direction over its purpose and future use, but councillors admit that it will take some time for an income stream to become established.

Councillor Peter Fox said: "The Shire Hall is one of the jewels in the Monmouthshire crown we got to give it time to grow from strength to strength.

"During this period I hope it will feature as an interim venue for meetings of this council during its transition year from leaving County Hall and moving to Usk."

Cllr Bob Greenland said: "At a cost of £229,477 to us, it's imperative that the Shire Hall widens its remit in the current circumstances to find other resources for income and the plan goes some way to achieving this.

"It has been a phenomenal effort to bring the project forward. It's important to have a good business plan in place for a much loved stand alone community facility."

Cllr Phil Murphy said: "To us the Shire Hall is a national treasure, regardless of any National Lottery conditions imposed on us."

Cllr Roger Harris added: "We need to promote the Shire Hall as much as possible so it doesn't become a huge drain on resources in the future."
