SEALED Knot, the English Civil War re-enactment group, will parade at Coleford Market Place on Saturday February 23 at 2.30pm, to commemorate those who fell in the Battle of Coleford 370 years ago.
The action on February 20 1643 was the result of the deployment of 2,000 Royalist troops, raised by the Marquis of Worcester around the Raglan area, to Gloucester.
Their movements were hampered by an attack from a small contingent of armed militia and townsfolk, led by Colonel John Berrow. Two hours of fighting resulted in the death of the Royalist commander, Sir Richard Lawley, who was killed before the town militia vanished into the Forest, leaving the depleted Royalist forces to continue on their way.
A month later the entire Royalist force was attacked at Highnam by Parliamentarian soldiers, and all the Royalists were either killed or captured.
The memorial plaque in Coleford which commemorates the events was donated by Sealed Knot two years ago, when it had an official unveiling by Arthur Jackson, chairman of the re-enacters, and MP Mark Harper.
The events will be rounded off by a parade, followed by a 'display of armes' – including musket fire.
