A GROUP of old soldiers are seeking support for reviving the Remembrance Day service at Yorkley Cenotaph.
"I think the last service was around 28 years ago," said Bert Butson, who is trying to revive the ceremony with the help of fellow ex-servicemen in the area.
"We are appealing to any ex-service men or women and their friends to come along on Sunday November 14 at 2pm," said Bert, 75, who lives in Danby Road.
Bill said there was no longer a branch of the British Legion in Yorkley – it ceased operations around 30 years ago – but there must now be many, many ex-servicemen and women in the area who would like to meet for the service.
"We used to meet at the Nag's Head," he said. "But then the interest gradually dropped away. A lot of people then went to Lydney for the Remembrance ceremony, but now a few of us thought it might be time to start it again.
"We have found quite a bit of interest in the plan, and the Brownies have said they would attend. Captain Hunt of Viney Hill will be conducting the service."
Bert himself served in the Durham Light Infantry. "We used to call ourselves 'Death's Last Intake'," he joked. "In fact I was in the Duke of Cornwall's Regiment when I joined up but then I was sent into the DLS."
He was part of the force that landed in France on D-day. "We went all through then – all the way to Germany," he said.
He has lived in Yorkley for around 65 years after growing up in Pillowell – when his family moved to Yorkley, he kept on going to Pillowell school.
He says the November 14 afternoon service will be a grand chance for everyone to meet up again. His message was: "Please come along and support us."
