A CAR dramatically burst into flames in Monmouth this afternoon, blocking one of the main routes into the town.
Drivers saw flames coming from the bonnet of the blue car on the northbound section of the A40 near the Gibraltar tunnels.
The incident led to one lane being closed with a six-mile tailback to the Raglan junction
A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 1.48pm South Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a car fire on the A40 northbound in Monmouth.
“One appliance from Monmouth was on the scene, with over-border assistance from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.
“Firefighters tackled the fire using breathing apparatus and two hose reels and it was extinguished by 2.42pm.”
It is not know whether anyone was injured in the incident.
