A CHARITY fundraiser who has raised thousands of pounds is calling time on collecting after more than half a century’s service.
Brian Probert from Lydney began his voluntary charity work for the Royal British Legion in the mid-1960s, and is finally stepping down from fund-
raising at the age of 80.
Charity organisers thanked his ‘wonderful’ efforts for the RBL and Lydney Hospital, saying he deserves ‘a good rest’.
Marie Fraser Griffiths, of the Friends of Lydney Hospital, said: “He’s collected the amazing sum of £7,215 for the Friends of Lydney Hospital over many years, from collecting donations and selling Christmas cards and raffle tickets, and helped us with our Save Our Hospital Campaign five years ago.
“He’s been really committed to the cause and has done a lot of fundraising off his own bat. Brian’s done a fantastic job, he’s been wonderful.”
Mr Probert joined the Royal British Legion’s Lydney branch in 1959 and recently received a special letter from the RBL Poppy Appeal’s headquarters commending him for his collecting efforts over more than 50 years.
He was a regular fixture collecting in the town at Harry Tuffins supermarket during Poppy Week.
And Lydney branch chairman Mel Rudge said: “He’s got a heart of gold and we’re very grateful for all his efforts over the years, which included visiting sick people in their homes.”
Brian more recently became a voluntary self-appointed supporter of the hospital ‘Friends’ in response to the kind care provided for his sister Ruby and other family members by staff, and in particular by now retired GP Dr Peter Fellows.
Friends secretary Mrs Mary Thurston sincerely thanked Brian on behalf of the group and of the people of Lydney and district.
