THE CHURCH of St John the Evangelist – which dominates the Coleford skyline from the west – has been put on the market.
The church has been at the centre of a vigorous community campaign since the Church of England first proposed closing it in the summer of 2015.
Now it has been put on the market through commercial property agents Kevin J Toombs Chartered Surveyors who say it would be a purchase for somebody “with a creative mind” – and half a million pounds.
Mr Toombs, whose practice is based in Lydney, says a buyer is being sought “who could save this building and create a legacy for future generations.”
He said: “This building is now looking for a new owner to bring it back to life and save this focal point of the town.
“Interested parties will be asked to submit a business plan, which needs to conform to guidelines set by the Prince’s Regeneration Trust and Churches Conservation Trust.”
He said all submissions will be considered by the Diocese of Gloucester, which is selling St John’s and the Church Commissioners.
“The option considered most sustainable, with the widest benefit will be considered.”
He said the church is for sale at £500,000 but ‘bona fide’ offers will be considered.
The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1878, with the nave and apse completed in 1880, followed by the north porch and vestry a decade later and the north transept in 1907.
A south west tower and spire were included in the original design but never built.
After a number of surveys, reviews and assessments, worship ceased in November 2012 and it formally closed on July 16 last year.
Mr Toombs said the internal roof timbers “are a piece of artwork”.
The Sunday congregation of St John’s has been meeting at St Mary Margaret Roman Catholic Church in High Nash, Coleford.
