OFFICIALS from Newent RFC are in talks with senior management from Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre about the feasibility of locating the rugby club on to the school site.
The success of the club has meant its existing site at the recreation ground, which is leased from Newent Town Council, no longer meets its needs and they need somewhere where it can expand and upgrade their facilities.
The project at the school would involve building a new clubhouse, changing rooms and enhancing the existing pitches. The rugby club believes it can source the funding so there would not be any burden on school funds. Both the school and rugby club are both positively engaged with this initiative and both parties are keen to work together to do everything within their powers to take the project to a successful conclusion.
John Moore, secretary of the rugby club, said: "I am pleased with the positive response from the school management and there appears to be a genuine desire from both parties to make this happen.
"Our partnership would be in line with the underlying aims of both organisations to be in the heart of the community for the community and to benefit the students and young people of the community school. There is no doubt that the school, rugby club and community in general will benefit as a result of this project."
Principal Mrs Kirsten Harrison added: "We welcome the opportunity of exploring any opportunities that may benefit our students and their community."
