DOG walkers are being invited to help cut crime by becoming "the eyes and ears" of their communities.
'Paws on Patrol' is being described as a Neighbourhood Watch scheme for dog walkers. It was launched in Mitcheldean on Sunday.
District council street warden Damion Collins said dog walkers throughout the Forest were being encouraged to sign up for Paws on Patrol.
He said: "This isn't about people stepping in and taking action themselves, it is simply about providing the police and council with information so, together, local communities and authorities can help make neighbourhoods even better places to live."
Dog owners who sign up receive a 20 per cent discount on street wardens' micro-chipping a pack of dog fouling bags and 10 per cent off Knockley Dog Foods' own brand pet food.
Cllr Terry Hale, cabinet member for the community, said it was believed dog walkers could play an important role.
"Dog walkers spend a lot of time in their communities at different times of the day and evenings so are very likely to spot when something out of the ordinary is happening," he said.
Wardens will be attending a companion dog show at Forest Oak Farm, The Purlieu, Lydney, on February 10 where they will have a stand at which owners can register. Another way to join is to telephone 'Paws on Patrol' on Dean 810000 or email street.wardens
