POLICE are appealing for witnesses after three cyclists were injured, one seriously, in a collision on the A40 on Sunday.
They are particularly keen to trace a driver who may be a key witness to the crash which took place just south of Ganarew.
Four cyclists and a Land Rover Discovery taking part in a cycle ride were stationary in a lay-by at around 5.25pm. Four cars were travelling along the A40 towards Ross-on-Wye when they all braked suddenly, the reason for which is unclear.
One of the cars, a black Renault Clio, entered the lay-by, hitting both the Land Rover and three of the cyclists.
One man in his 40s received serious leg injuries and was taken to the Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny by ambulance. He has now been transferred to the Morriston Hospital in Swansea where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
The other cyclists – a woman in her 40s and a male in his 30s – received minor injuries and were also treated at the Nevill Hall Hospital.
PC David Cain-Leeks, who is investigating the incident, said: "We have spoken to all the drivers involved except one, who was at the front of the convoy and may not be aware the crash took place as it occurred behind him.
"It is vital we speak to him because he may have vital information about a collision that could have left a man with life-changing injuries. I would like him to come forward at the earliest possibility."
The driver was described as being a man in his 20s who was of Asian appearance and travelling alone in a dark blue Ford Fiesta. The registration number was a 2002 '52' plate that started with C.
PC Cain-Leeks can be contacted via the West Mercia Police non-emergency line, 0300 333 3000, or information can be passed on anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
