FOREST Foodbank says those dependent on them providing emergency supplies have rocketed by 25 per cent since last year.
Spokesperson for the Forest Foodbank Sandi McDonagh says they have supplied almost 3,000 people – of which 1,127 were children – with three days of food.
Sandi said: “We received 23,713kgs of food and distributed 23,094kgs. Unlike the national picture, our highest usage group is low income followed by benefit delays and changes (nationally it is the reverse) and single people followed by families.”
The Foodbank has seen nationally a 2 per cent increase in people needing their help.
Sandi added: “Only the Trussell Trust collect data so this information does not reflect the other foodbanks in the area.
“We also provide seasonal items, toiletries, pet food and advice from Green Square Housing Association on housing and financial issues.
“One of my memories from last year was a lady who was in tears because we’d helped her feed her dog as well as her family.
“A big thank you to all the agencies who donate food and supplies.”
