A SCHEME to build a giant shipping dock at Awre would have created the Forest's own Portishead, says resident Mark Awre.

According to old plans Mark has dug up the dock would have been at the mouth of the Bideford Brook, which winds its way to the Severn from Blakeney. Its tidal reach, known as Brimspill, would have been the site of a giant sea lock for letting ships in and out at high tide.

The plans were drawn up in 1861, and they show that the dock would have taken advantage of an extension of the Forest of Dean Railway beyond the point where it joined the South Wales main line, effectively giving a direct link to the Forest's coal and iron ore resources.

"It could have been our Portishead. However, it never came to friution. I think the families behind it did not have enough money to carry on," said Mark, who is busy organising Awre Show which will have an exhibition of local memorabilia.

"There will be lots to do and plenty of entertainment – sideshows, and Lydney Town Band included," said Mark.

"We will also be telling the story of the last 150 years of Awre in pictures."

The show will be held on May 4 Bank Holiday Monday and the village will have a warm welcome for everyone, said Mark.
