SOME suspicious-looking imposters were spotted in Tutshill, near Chepstow, over the Easter holidays.
Twenty nine scarecrows, all representing characters from children’s films, loitered in front gardens, lurked in driveways or hung-out in front windows.
It was all for a good cause though according to Carol Clammer, one of the organisers. She says: “Each of the 29 scarecrows was carefully and ingeniously made by Tutshill families, groups and individuals in the preceding weeks to fit the 2016 theme. They ranged in size from the tiny Turbo to a house-high BFG.”
The event raised £600 for the repair and development of churches in Tidenham parish.
The scarecrow trail has become an annual event and nearly 350 people, from as far away as Cornwall and Scotland, walked around the village trying to guess the characters in the two weeks from Good Friday to last Saturday (April 9).
The competition was rounded off with a results event at Tutshill School on Sunday (April 10). Hosted by Jane Penny, children and families minister for Tidenham Parish, the afternoon included scarecrow-themed activities for children and homemade cakes.
The winners of the Guess the Scarecrow competition were Alex and Freya Cook from Tutshill. Prizes were kindly donated by Perrygrove Railway and Whirlikidz of Chepstow.
Jane says: “This has been a lovely community event and we thank everyone for the superb way in which all the parts came together to make it so successful.”
