A HIT and run victim who was knocked down on a notoriously dangerous stretch of the A48 was said to be "critical but stable' in hospital on Tuesday.

Graham Thomas, 22, from Woolaston, was knocked down by a car on the outskirts of Aylburton at about 12.30am last Sunday. He is being treated for serious head injuries at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

It is understood the former Woolaston Primary School and Wyedean School pupil was walking back after an evening with friends at the Cross Inn. He appears to have been struck after walking out of the village on a section of road where there's no pavement or lighting. There's been a string of accidents on this stretch of road in the past, including that of 18-year-old Tom Bendall who was left for dead after it is suspected he was run over by more than one vehicle.

Police say a 34-year-old man from Bristol has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop after a road traffic collision and dangerous driving. He has been bailed pending further enquiries to return to Gloucester Police Station on January 30.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has any information about it, is asked to get in touch with Gloucester Police on 0845 090 1234 quoting incident 20 of November 8.
