SHE did it – with a broken wrist and all!

Coleford mum-of-three Kelly Ruck battled through excruciating pain to finish the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge in memory of her son, Preston, who died at just two days old in 2006.

The 30-year-old was determined to complete the challenge after her fellow friends and fundraisers had to drop out.

One of those, Becky Hurcombe, said: “Unfortunately Laura (Green) was unable to continue with the challenge and, after reaching the top of Ben Nevis, I fell and broke my ankle.

“Undefeated Kelly returned to Scotland the following Friday (July 1) to complete it – alone! She also fell on Ben Nevis which resulted in a suspected broken wrist, but she was so determined to complete this challenge for her son and angel babies despite the excruciating pain.

“Kelly went on to complete Scafell Pike and Snowdon (in the dark) one handed in 22 hours and 50 minutes. After a long wait in A and E, it was confirmed she had broken her wrist.

“She is amazing. She did an awesome job, completing it on her own must have been so hard. I am very proud to be her best friend.”

Kelly said: “[The challenge is] probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The three peaks solo with awful weather, no sleep, and a broken wrist on Nevis, meaning one handed climbs on Scafell and Snowdon, was tough. But I did it – and in 24 hours.

“I had a promise to keep, to Preston and all of the other angel babies and their families. They’ve now reached the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales.

“Feeling totally broken after finally having a cast put on last Sunday, I can rest with a content heart, knowing I gave my all.”

So far Kelly and the team have raised £4,184 – over double the original target of £2,000 – for Sands. The stillbirth and neonatal death charity supports anyone affected by the death of a baby, working to improve the care bereaved parents receive, and promoting research to reduce the loss of babies’ lives.

During her challenge, Kelly carried an ‘angel banner’ with all the names of the babies who have died.
