AT the age of 11, Guy Jones is believed to be the youngest student to gain an A* in Latin.
Guy, who lives in Tutshill, was introduced to the ancient language as a five-year-old by his grandfather.
The St John’s-on-the-Hill School pupil and his grandfather, Mr David Griffiths, have now started learning Ancient Greek and hope to take a GCSE in the language next year.
Guy had to travel to Newport in June to sit the papers set by the Welsh Joint Education Committee which included
a tougher ‘additional Latin’ test.
He said: “My grandad introduced me to Latin when I was turning five with some simple vocabulary and I quite liked it.
“I started doing courses and I wasn’t just enjoying it, I got to the point where I could consider doing exams.
“Grandad thought it would be right that I took an exam to show how I had come on.
“He’s been doing a bit of Greek with me and I’d like to advance the Greek and Latin together.”
St John’s-on-the-Hill have recently introduced Latin to the curriculum and Guy helps his classmates.
His mum, Janine Griffiths-Baker, said: “I think he might have set a new record by becoming the youngest child ever to receive the top mark in GCSE Latin.
“I think it helps him with other subjects, since he’s been doing the Latin, he’s done well in English, French and Spanish.”
