Daughter, June Merry, who still lives in the Forest, recognised the photo immediately because the family still have a copy, along with a matching photograph of William's wife, Hilda.
"He originally worked in the mines," says Mrs Merry. "But after that he spent a long time working at Whitecliff Quarry and later at what was Beechams."
William died 1966, leaving his wife and two daughters, June and Cicely (Pendrey) who live close by each other in Sling and Broadwell.
Wife, Hilda, died peacefully 34 years after her husband in the year 2000 aged 100.
