A ‘TIRED and dated’ leisure centre which shares its site with a brand new multi-million pound school could be set for a £6m revamp.

A Monmouthshire Council report into Caldicot Leisure Centre projects that the upgrade could deliver “a sustainable return on investment” through increased membership.

The council’s cabinet is being asked to approve a £127,600 feasibility study today (Wednesday, July 31) into revamping the 1970s-built facility, which is right next to the state-of-the-art Caldicot School.

Proposals include extending the centre’s fitness suite, a soft play area with a café, new changing facilities and a redesign of the entrance and ground floor.

Its 20m swimming pool could also see an upgrade – including a new viewing area – alongside existing spa facilities, while changing facilities could be provided for the outdoor 3G pitch.

The council report shows that the centre currently has 850 paying members, which could be boosted significantly if the revamp goes ahead.

Monmouth Leisure Centre’s recent £7.4m revamp has convinced council officials that “there is significant untapped demand for services if they are presented in a contemporary manner”.

While Caldicot is the council’s next leisure centre needing “significant uplift”, future improvements to Chepstow Leisure Centre could also be in the pipeline.

Council officials say Caldicot’s facilities will need at least £350,000 spending on them to keep the centre operating over the next few years.

“Even with these changes the facility looks tired and dated,” says the council report. This is thrown into stark relief given that it now shares a campus with the fantastic new Caldicot School.”

With the town centre targeted for a £10m regeneration as well, the leisure centre will need a major overhaul to continue to attract customers.

“These are good times for Caldicot and there is a confidence about the town that additional investment can grow,” the report adds.
