THE Forest Council offices and the Dean Forest Railway have shown their support for Armed Forces' Day.
The Dean Forest Railway is also offering a discount to serving personnel, their families and veterans at its Great Western gala this weekend – Armed Forces' Day is on Saturday.
The chair of the Forest Council, Councillor Norman Stephens, raised the Armed Forces' Day flag watched by council staff, members of 1Rifles at Beachley and members of the British Legion.
He said Armed Forces' Day "highlighted the outstanding work that our armed forces community does.
"In particular we are doing this to demonstrate our support for our local battalion, 1Rifles, who are part of our own Forest of Dean community.
"We also remind ourselves of all the service families who have to endure regular and long periods of separation.
"I'm very pleased to be supporting this event which is in recognition of the wonderful work our Armed Forces do.
"We recognise the loyalty and commitment shown by them and those that have served in the past on behalf of our community."
Volunteers at the Dean Forest Railway were joined by members of the British Legion and Captain Matt Derby, welfare officer of 1Rifles at the support day.
Railway spokesman Stuart Bearne said: "We are holding a Great Western gala weekend and it also an opportunity to support Armed Forces' Day which falls on Saturday.
"We are showing our support and appreciation for the work of the armed services, particularly for 1 Rifles at Beachley.
"We will be allowed discounted entry for both serving and ex-service personnel."
The gala will feature three ex-Great Western Railway steam locomotives operating an intensive service of passenger, freight and auto trains.
Captain Derby said: "Armed Forces' Day is important because it shows appreciation for what we are doing.
"We are grateful to the Dean Forest Railway for its show of support."
The discount offer is £2 off adult and seniors fare, £1 off for children and a saving of £6 on family tickets.
