EVENTS marking VJ – Victory in Japan – Day brought a very busy summer for the Ross branch of the British Legion to a close.
The commemoration on Saturday saw music and games for families at the bandstand in Wye Street during the day and the lighting of a beacon at The Prospect as darkness fell.
Members of the Coleford branch of the British Legion travelled to Ross to take part in the event.
Secretary of the Ross branch, Margaret Jones, said: “Some veterans feel that they were the ‘Forgotten Army’ but the victory over Japan meant the end of World War Two and we felt it was important to mark it.
“Part of what we do as the British Legion is to educate people about what veterans did that enables us to live the lives we do today.”
As well as the VJ celebrations, the Ross branch hosted the Herefordshire county rally of the Legion, marked VE (Victory in Europe Day), held a tea for veterans and commemorated the centenary of the arrival in Gallipoli of troops from the Herefordshire Regiment.
Mrs Jones added: “It has been a very busy summer.”
