MISS Forest of Dean Amy Brown opened the inaugural maze runner at the Elton Giant Mazes.

Some 116 people took part in the race to raise money for the Forest of Dean Lions Club and other local good causes.

There were various length runs over a 2K, 5K or 10K course followed by obstacles and challenges and a run through the Elton Giant Mazes.

The 5K run included a canicross section where runners ran with their dogs. The 10k run included a tough climb up to the Littledean Hill Ridge and back down the mazes.  On returning to the mazes, runners were challenged by the Newnham Girl Guides and Lydney Sea Cadets to recall Darth Vader’s Flight Number back to his Death Star.  Those who could not remember the number were subject to an attack by flour, UV powder and water squirts.

Maze owner Brian Griffin said: “Helped by a beautiful dry and sunny day the Lions and other fundraisers benefited from the event.

“Our thanks to the local landowners and farmers for the use of their land, The Forest Phoenix Accountancy and the Forest of Dean District Council who sponsored the event.”

First to finish in the 10k multi-event were Sam Stephens and Geraint Rowlands in 63mins while the first lady to finish was Rebecca Evans in 84mins.

Peter Robin, who is aged 45, and is autistic, did the 5K run with one of the Riding Disabled Association’s whips, Stephanie Rogers and two of its volunteers, Kirsty Holder and Ellie Hodgkinson.

His mum, Glenda said: “Peter has managed to gain sponsorship (mostly through his own efforts) of more than £200 for our group towards the new carriage we are hoping to buy.”
