TWO Forest schools have got behind a project to help people in Africa and Asia hit by sight loss.
Students at Dene Magna School in Mitcheldean and Forest High School in Cinderford have spent the last month collecting pairs of old spectacles for the project organised in the area by the Severn Dean Lions.
John Matthews, of Severn Dean Lions, said: “This is the second time the Severn Dean Lions have organised a collection with schools.
“We work in GL14 and GL17 postcodes and both schools are very supportive.
The glasses go to France where they are cleaned and graded and are sent to eye clinics in Africa, India and other parts of Asia.
“It’s a simple thing but it has a big impact on the lives of the people who receive them.
“We can only do this if organisations such as Dene Magna and Forest Hgh support us so we are really grateful.”
Deputy head at Dene Magna, Scott Albon, said he sent out an e-mail and presentation to tutor groups and the boxes were soon filled.
He said: “The response from the school community has been amazing and in true Dene Magna style they have stepped up to help others.”
