PHONE boxes in Trellech are being given a new lease of life thanks to a partnership between Trellech United Community Council (TUCC) and local charities.

Chair of the Babington Meadow committee, Alastair Robertson, said: “TUCC have worked with charities, including ours, over the past two years to rescue parts of our telephonic history, but also to add value to community facilities.

“In remote communities with an ageing population, including Penallt and New Mills, a community defibrillator has been installed in the redundant phone boxes. Training is planned to build up community expertise in their use.

“Other places, such as Pen-y-Fan, the Narth, Parkhouse and lower Whitebrook identified the need for local information points and decided the phone boxes were perfect place for the job.

“As well as being given a wash and brush-up, some of the boxes have been transformed into works of art with stained glass panels.”

Alastair added: “There has been great local support for the initiative and lots of people have worked hard to make it happen.”
