A BOY was airlifted to hospital after an accident at a skate park.

The incident happened at Monmouth Skate Park on Rockfield Road at 6pm on Bank Holiday Monday (August 26) when the youngster reportedly fell onto his back while trying a stunt on his scooter.

The Welsh Ambulance Service were called to the scene and airlifted the boy - identified as a boy called Sam from Ross-on-Wye on social media - to University Hospital Of Wales, Cardiff.

A poster said he was released later that evening after medical staff confirmed he had just badly winded himself.

An ambulance service spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a person needing urgent medical attention at the Monmouth skate park.

"We responded with one rapid response vehicle and one ambulance and we were supported by the Wales Air Ambulance.

"One patient was transported by air ambulance to University Hospital Of Wales, Cardiff.”

A spokeswoman for Wales Air Ambulance said: "The charity’s Dafen-based aircraft was tasked and arrived at scene at 6.39pm.

"Following treatment from our ‘Welsh Flying Medics’ a patient was then airlifted to the UHW Cardiff."

Some posters on the town’s Monmouth New Business Facebook page described the call out of the air ambulance as “a bit OTT.”

But others said the response was entirely appropriate, with one saying: “Definitely not OTT at all. Helicopters sent out for possible back (spine) injuries are 100% better than being transported on road for a longer time, and bad road conditions.
