AROUND £2,000 was raised at the Woolaston Carnival on Saturday (June 24) which will go towards the upkeep of the memorial hall.
A float decorated by Woolaston School’s Gardening Gang led the parade around the village from Ash Way to the memorial hall.
Among those taking part were the Scout group that was formed last autumn, llamas, Mo the Donkey – who made national headlines when he escorted owner Charlotte Sullivan up the aisle in Ross – and the Woolaston Bassetts.
The village is also looking to restore the skatepark in the field adjacent to the hall which has been closed because of rotting timber.
A public meeting will be held on Friday, July 7 at 6pm to discuss resolving the problem.
Carnival organiser John Anderson said: “We’re still counting the money but I think we are looking at around £2,000 which will go towards the upkeep of Woolaston Memorial Hall,” said John.
“We also have a problem with the skatepark which was built on our playing field about eight years ago.
“Unfortunately the timber has rotted and we have had to take it down because of safety issues.
“The estimated cost of replacement is between £25,000-£30,000.”
“We are holding a public meeting to discus the situation at the hall at 6.30pm on July 7 to garner support from parents.
“The carnival itself was fantastic. We were expecting rain but in the end it turned into a beautiful sunny afternoon.
“Lots up people turned up and it was extremely busy with more stalls than we’ve had before.”
There was music from the Chepstow Community Big Band, Woolaston School choir and singer-songwriter Stuart Anderson.
