IN an exercise in youthful town planning, children from Severnbanks Primary School have modelled their vision for the future of Lydney.
The pupils placed 3D models they made themselves based on mapping tiles supplied by the district council. They then added flags to the model detailing what they liked and didn't like about Lydney and how they would like to see the town develop in the future.
It's the culmination of a year-long project involving members of Lydney Area Action Plan, town councillors, school staff and officers from the district council, who are aiming to work with local partners to improve the local economy and the connection between the town and its historic docks.
Cllr Brian Robinson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Efficient Council and Planning Policy, said: "This event is an excellent way of engaging the children in shaping their own future and bringing a consultation process to life. They were really engaged and enthusiastic."
Teacher, Sally Hunt, who worked closely on the project with pupils on the school council said the project was a good exercise in giving: "pupils a voice".
"While going around I could see there were a lot of calls for McDonalds and KFC, but some wanted a proper football stadium and more facilities in the parks, like adventure playgrounds.
"There was a strong feeling they wanted to feel safer where they play in the streets of around their houses. Cars shouldn't be going so fast. They also wanted to see some different shops and they definitely don't like the bus station being boarded up."
Some of those views might well strike a note with their parents. Adults are now being urged to play their part in shaping the future of the town between now and 2026.
Further consultations are taking place as follows:
•This Thursday (June 30) at The Annexe function rooms, Newerne Street from 2pm to 7pm.
•Tuesday (July 5) at Lydney Town Hall, High Street, from 2pm to 7pm.
•On September 13 the suggestions made at the earlier events will be reviewed and prioritised. Lydney Town Hall from 7pm to 9pm.
