CHEPSTOW Town kept control of their Welsh League destiny with a workmanlike victory over Newport Civil Service.

Town face a fixture pile-up in the run-up to the end of the season but this win means that with 10 games to go promotion to Welsh League division two is still possible.

Goals from Rob Thorne and Dale Clarke ensured the points but a string of outstanding saves from returning keeper Craig Brimble kept the visitors at bay.

It's two years since Chepstow ended a game without scoring but manager Russell Griffiths wanted to tighten up defensively.

He said: "We played a 5-4-1 formation and the boys seemed to enjoy it.

"It was a workmanlike performance and the boys matched them. We knew Civil Service and we knew it would be a battle.

"Having Craig back in goal made a big difference. He saved twice from one-on-one positions and he made an awesome save when we were 1-0 up.

"The second goal was from a quickly taken free kick and Dale was there for it.

"We've been caught by similar goals so it was nice that it was us who got one this time.

"We've got 10 games left but there have been some strange scores and anyone can beat anyone.

"It includes Llantwit Major and Llwydcoed (who are both vying for promotion) so we're not taking anything for granted.

"Teams at the bottom have got a lot to play for because it's a big fall if you drop out of the Welsh League."

Tonight (Wednesday), Chepstow travel to Treowen Stars where a win could lift them into sixth place ahead of Llanwern on goal difference.

Town are 10 points adrift of Pontypridd in the third promotion spot but have four games in hand.
