BREAM Primary School pulled off an incredible performance to win the shield category at the national finals of a tag rugby tournament.

The school is the first in the county to make it to the annual 'Tag to Twickenham' event which is co-organised by police forces across the country.

Both staff and the year six pupils attended the finals on July 10 after achieving a top four finish at the regional heats in Taunton.

While they missed out in the cup category the team won three games and drew one to top their league and triumph as shield winners. The feat was made more incredible by the fact Bream fielded year four and five pupils players during the tournament.

Superintendent Simon Atkinson said: "Bream is the first school in the county to make it to the national tournament in the six years it has been running. For the team to then go on and win the shield is a great achievement.

"Our officers helped coach the children in recent months as one of the aims of the scheme is to build relationships with local communities and between the police and young people. Everyone here is proud of what they have done."

Police community support officer Tania Shuttleworth, attended the event with the school. She added: "Bream was by far the smallest school at the finals but they played brilliantly and were well supported by parents."
